Mid-century modern

I grew up surrounded by mid-century modern furnishings and fabrics and they are quirky and enchanting.

Pineapple party

Pineapples are just such great looking fruit. I couldn’t help but go a bit mid-century modern with the shape and then, well, what can you do? Suck on a pineapple.

leaf/Annie’s flowers

This was a whole lot of fun to do. Annie was my grandmother and I wish she was around to see what I’m doing.

Who’s Laughing

Blue-winged kookaburra

The blue-winged kookaburra is the Top End’s version of this iconic bird. Like most Territorians, it’s a non-conformist and its laugh sounds nothing like its southern cousins. I had no idea what kind of bird might be making such a raucous ruckus in the bush when we first moved to our rural property. I imagined some enormous and strange feathered creature and was astounded to discover the source of the sound. (You can hear it here.)

Tomfoolery

Documenting the carryings-on of the librarian – and her cat – especially after hours, when things are not always tidy.

Nesting

Rainbow pitta

Rainbow pittas are elusive and somehow just a little bit magical with a blue flash on a green wings, an orange cap upon a little black head. Although they are reasonably common, catching a glimpse of one in the wild is a rare treat.

During the wet season, rainbow pittas nest on the ground and in trees, adapting their architecture to suit the environment.

This design is inspired by the mid-century modern designs of the 1950’s and 60’s.
